  Ralph Edward Flanders (1880-1970) — also known as Ralph E. Flanders — of Springfield, Windsor County, Vt. Born in Barnet, Caledonia County, Vt., September 28, 1880. Republican. Mechanical engineer; delegate to Republican National Convention from Vermont, 1940 (member, Resolutions Committee); U.S. Senator from Vermont, 1946-59. Congregationalist. Member, American Society of Mechanical Engineers; American Academy of Political and Social Science; American Economic Association; United World Federalists. Died in Springfield, Windsor County, Vt., February 19, 1970 (age 89 years, 144 days). Cremated; ashes interred at Summer Hill Cemetery, Springfield, Vt.
  Relatives: Son of Albert Wellington Flanders and Mary Lizzie (Gilfillan) Flanders; married, November 1, 1911, to Helen E. Hartness; first cousin twice removed of Alvan Flanders; second cousin twice removed of Francis Durrell Flanders.

  Edwin Atkins Merritt (1828-1916) — also known as Edwin A. Merritt — of Potsdam, St. Lawrence County, N.Y. Born in Sudbury, Rutland County, Vt., February 26, 1828. Republican. Surveyor; engineer; member of New York state assembly from St. Lawrence County 2nd District, 1860-61; served in the Union Army during the Civil War; delegate to New York state constitutional convention, 1867-68; candidate for New York state treasurer, 1875; U.S. Collector of Customs, 1878-81; U.S. Consul General in London, 1882-85. Died December 26, 1916 (age 88 years, 304 days). Burial location unknown.

  Frederick John Mills (1865-1953) — also known as F. J. Mills — of Pocatello, Bannock County, Idaho; Pasadena, Los Angeles County, Calif. Born in Topsham, Orange County, Vt., April 29, 1865. Republican. Engineer; Lieutenant Governor of Idaho, 1895-97; served in the U.S. Army during the Spanish-American War. Scottish ancestry. On October 3, 1899, in Salt Lake City, he shot and killed John C. O'Melveny, chief engineer of the Oregon Short Line Railroad; was arrested immediately and charged with first-degree murder; at trial, he claimed the homicide was justified by the "criminal intimacy" between O'Melveny and his wife, while he was away in military service; the jury acquitted him in only 15 minutes. Died in Los Angeles, Los Angeles County, Calif., September 28, 1953 (age 88 years, 152 days). Burial location unknown.

The Political Graveyard

The Political Graveyard is a web site about U.S. political history and cemeteries. Founded in 1996, it is the Internet's most comprehensive free source for American political biography, listing 320,919 politicians, living and dead.
 
  The coverage of this site includes (1) the President, Vice President, members of Congress, elected state and territorial officeholders in all fifty states, the District of Columbia, and U.S. territories; and the chief elected official, typically the mayor, of qualifying municipalities; (2) candidates at election, including primaries, for any of the above; (3) all federal judges and all state appellate judges; (4) certain federal officials, including the federal cabinet, diplomatic chiefs of mission, consuls, U.S. district attorneys, collectors of customs and internal revenue, members of major federal commissions; and political appointee (pre-1969) postmasters of qualifying communities; (5) state and national political party officials, including delegates, alternate delegates, and other participants in national party nominating conventions; (6) Americans who served as "honorary" consuls for other nations before 1950. Note: municipalities or communities "qualify", for Political Graveyard purposes, if they have at least half a million person-years of history, inclusive of predecessor, successor, and merged entities.  
  The listings are incomplete; development of the database is a continually ongoing project.
