Shot and killed by his mining partner, J. T. Newcomer, at Snell Mine, near Columbia, Tuolumne County, Calif., April 21, 1896 (age 62 years, 227 days). Newcomer claimed self-defense, but was convicted of murder and sentenced to prison.
