      Abraham Charles Bartolette Havens (1841-1928) — also known as Abram C. B. Havens — of Ocean County, N.J. Born August 28, 1841. Member of New Jersey state senate from Ocean County, 1881-83; Ocean County Clerk, 1886-1900. Died February 6, 1928 (age 86 years, 162 days). Interment at Havens Family Graveyard at First Baptist Church.
      Relatives: Brother of John Greenleaf Webb Havens; father of W. Burtis Havens; uncle of Horatio Ely Havens.

      Horatio Ely Havens (1871-1960) — also known as H. Ely Havens — of Lakewood, Ocean County, N.J. Born in Laurelton, Brick, Ocean County, N.J., April 21, 1871. Republican. Furniture and china business; alternate delegate to Republican National Convention from New Jersey, 1916. Died March 25, 1960 (age 88 years, 339 days). Interment at Havens Family Graveyard at First Baptist Church.
      Relatives: Son of Horatio Ely Havens ; nephew of John Greenleaf Webb Havens and Abraham Charles Bartolette Havens; first cousin of W. Burtis Havens.

Mariner; automobile dealer; member of New Jersey state senate from Ocean County, 1910-11, 1914-15, 1923-31, 1942-46; delegate to Republican National Convention from New Jersey, 1928, 1940, 1944; secretary of state of New Jersey, 1931-41. Indicted for tax evasion by a federal grand jury in 1937. He killed himself, by self-inflicted gunshot, in Toms River, Ocean County, N.J., May 18, 1958 (age 88 years, 345 days). Interment at Riverside Cemetery.
      Relatives: Father of William Steelman Mathis.
      The Thomas A. Mathis Bridge (opened 1950), which carries eastbound Route 37 across Barnegat Bay, from Toms River to Seaside Heights, New Jersey, is named for him.

    The Political Graveyard

    The Political Graveyard is a web site about U.S. political history and cemeteries. Founded in 1996, it is the Internet's most comprehensive free source for American political biography, listing 320,919 politicians, living and dead.
     
      The coverage of this site includes (1) the President, Vice President, members of Congress, elected state and territorial officeholders in all fifty states, the District of Columbia, and U.S. territories; and the chief elected official, typically the mayor, of qualifying municipalities; (2) candidates at election, including primaries, for any of the above; (3) all federal judges and all state appellate judges; (4) certain federal officials, including the federal cabinet, diplomatic chiefs of mission, consuls, U.S. district attorneys, collectors of customs and internal revenue, members of major federal commissions; and political appointee (pre-1969) postmasters of qualifying communities; (5) state and national political party officials, including delegates, alternate delegates, and other participants in national party nominating conventions; (6) Americans who served as "honorary" consuls for other nations before 1950. Note: municipalities or communities "qualify", for Political Graveyard purposes, if they have at least half a million person-years of history, inclusive of predecessor, successor, and merged entities.
