Born in Lovingston, Nelson County, Va., October 17, 1851. Democrat. Financier; organizer and consolidator of streetcar companies in New York City; owned controlling interest in Equitable Life Assurance Society; co-founder, American Tobacco Company; engaged in mining development in Africa; one of the richest men in America at the time; delegate to Democratic National Convention from Virginia, 1904, 1912. Catholic. Irish ancestry. Died in Manhattan, New York County, N.Y., November 23, 1928 (age 77 years, 37 days). Entombed at Oak Ridge Estate Cemetery, Oak Ridge, Va.
  Relatives: Son of George A. Ryan and Lucinda (Fortune) Ryan; married, November 25, 1873, to Ida Mary Barry; married, October 29, 1917, to Mary Townsend (Nicoll) Cuyler (sister of DeLancey Nicoll; aunt of Courtlandt Nicoll); grandfather of Allan Aloysius Ryan Jr. and Clendenin James Ryan.

  DeLancey Nicoll (1854-1931) — of Manhattan, New York County, N.Y. Born in Shelter Island, Suffolk County, N.Y., June 24, 1854. Democrat. Lawyer; attorney for American Tobacco Company; New York County District Attorney, 1891-93; delegate to Democratic National Convention from New York, 1892, 1896; delegate to New York state constitutional convention 7th District, 1894; delegate to New York state constitutional convention 14th District, 1915. Died in Manhattan, New York County, N.Y., March 31, 1931 (age 76 years, 280 days). Interment at Nichols Cemetery, Shelter Island, N.Y.
  Relatives: Son of Solomon Townsend Nicoll and Charlotte Ann (Nicoll) Nicoll; brother of Mary Townsend Nicoll (who married Thomas Fortune Ryan); married, December 11, 1890, to Maud Churchill; uncle of Courtlandt Nicoll.

  Courtlandt Nicoll (c.1880-1938) — of Manhattan, New York County, N.Y. Born in New York, New York County, N.Y., about 1880. Republican. Lawyer; alternate delegate to Republican National Convention from New York, 1912; delegate to New York state constitutional convention 17th District, 1915; member of New York state senate 17th District, 1918, 1925-26; defeated, 1926. Episcopalian. Died in Water Mill, Suffolk County, Long Island, N.Y., September 20, 1938 (age about 58 years). Interment at Southampton Cemetery, Southampton, Long Island, N.Y.
  Relatives: Son of Benjamin Nicoll and Grace Davison (Lord) Nicoll; married, April 19, 1911, to Ione Page; nephew of DeLancey Nicoll and Mary Nicoll (who married Thomas Fortune Ryan).

  Ione Nicoll (d. 1940) — also known as Ione Page — of Manhattan, New York County, N.Y. Republican. Delegate to Republican National Convention from New York, 1924; delegate to New York convention to ratify 21st amendment, 1933. Female. Episcopalian. One of the leaders of the Women's Organization for National Prohibition Reform; bolted the Republican Party over the prohibition issue in 1932. Jumped or fell sixteen stories to her death, from her room at New York Hospital, Manhattan, New York County, N.Y., August 9, 1940. Interment at Southampton Cemetery, Southampton, Long Island, N.Y.
  Relatives: Daughter of Howard Page and Mildred A. (Mitchell) Page; married, April 19, 1911, to Courtlandt Nicoll.

  Allan Aloysius Ryan Jr. (b. 1903) — also known as Allan A. Ryan, Jr. — of Poughkeepsie, Dutchess County, N.Y.; Rhinebeck, Dutchess County, N.Y. Born in New York, New York County, N.Y., July 4, 1903. Republican. Stockbroker; owner of mining interests; member of New York state senate 28th District, 1939-42; served in the U.S. Army during World War II. Catholic. Burial location unknown.
  Relatives: Son of Allan A. Ryan and Sarah (Tack) Ryan; married, February 6, 1929, to Janet Newbold; married, January 19, 1937, to Eleanor Barry; married, August 5, 1941, to Priscilla St. George; grandson of Thomas Fortune Ryan.

  Clendenin James Ryan (1905-1957) — also known as Clendenin Ryan — of Manhattan, New York County, N.Y.; Allamuchy, Warren County, N.J. Born in Suffern, Rockland County, N.Y., July 16, 1905. Republican. Aide to Mayor Fiorello LaGuardia, 1938-39; New York City Commissioner of Commerce, 1939; served in the U.S. Navy during World War II; delegate to Republican National Convention from New Jersey, 1948; Independent Voters candidate for Governor of New Jersey, 1953. Catholic. Died by self-inflicted gunshot, in the same East 70th Street townhouse where his father killed himself in 1939, Manhattan, New York County, N.Y., September 12, 1957 (age 52 years, 58 days). Interment at Culinary Institute of America Grounds, Hyde Park, N.Y.
  Relatives: Son of Clendenin James Ryan (1882-1939) and Caroline (O'Neil) Ryan; married 1937 to Jean Harder; grandson of Thomas Fortune Ryan.

The Political Graveyard

The Political Graveyard is a web site about U.S. political history and cemeteries. Founded in 1996, it is the Internet's most comprehensive free source for American political biography, listing 320,919 politicians, living and dead.
 
  The coverage of this site includes (1) the President, Vice President, members of Congress, elected state and territorial officeholders in all fifty states, the District of Columbia, and U.S. territories; and the chief elected official, typically the mayor, of qualifying municipalities; (2) candidates at election, including primaries, for any of the above; (3) all federal judges and all state appellate judges; (4) certain federal officials, including the federal cabinet, diplomatic chiefs of mission, consuls, U.S. district attorneys, collectors of customs and internal revenue, members of major federal commissions; and political appointee (pre-1969) postmasters of qualifying communities; (5) state and national political party officials, including delegates, alternate delegates, and other participants in national party nominating conventions; (6) Americans who served as "honorary" consuls for other nations before 1950. Note: municipalities or communities "qualify", for Political Graveyard purposes, if they have at least half a million person-years of history, inclusive of predecessor, successor, and merged entities.
