Served in the Union Army during the Civil War; feed and grain business; mayor of Los Angeles, Calif., 1909-13. Scottish ancestry. Member, Freemasons; Knights Templar; Grand Army of the Republic; Moose. Suffered a stroke, and died two months later, in Los Angeles, Los Angeles County, Calif., August 2, 1923 (age 83 years, 315 days). Interment at Angelus-Rosedale Cemetery, Los Angeles, Calif.
  Relatives: Son of William Alexander and Mary Alexander; married 1862 to Annie Yeiser.

  William C. Grimes (1857-1931) — of Sterling, Johnson County, Neb.; Kingfisher, Kingfisher County, Okla. Born near New Lexington, Perry County, Ohio, November 6, 1857. Republican. Printing business; newspaper editor; grocer; implement dealer; Johnson County Sheriff, 1885-89; chair of Johnson County Republican Party, 1887-89; member, Committee to Notify Vice-Presidential Nominee, Republican National Convention, 1896 ; secretary of Oklahoma Territory, 1901; Governor of Oklahoma Territory, 1901. Died in Santa Monica, Los Angeles County, Calif., April 8, 1931 (age 73 years, 153 days). Interment somewhere in Santa Monica, Calif.

  Francis Joseph Heney (b. 1859) — also known as Francis J. Heney — of Fort Apache, Navajo County, Ariz.; Tucson, Pima County, Ariz.; San Francisco, Calif. Born in Lima, Livingston County, N.Y., March 17, 1859. Lawyer; cattle trader; Arizona territory attorney general, 1893-94; U.S. Attorney for Oregon, 1905; delegate to Republican National Convention from California, 1912; Progressive candidate for U.S. Senator from California, 1914. Burial location unknown.

  Charles Bennett Ledgerwood (1906-1999) — also known as Charles B. Ledgerwood — of Carlsbad, San Diego County, Calif. Born in Alhambra, Los Angeles County, Calif., January 3, 1906. Seed merchant; horticulturist; mayor of Carlsbad, Calif., 1958-60. Died in 1999 (age about 93 years). Burial location unknown.

  Mads Hansen Madsen (1863-1944) — also known as Mads H. Madsen — of Kimballton, Audubon County, Iowa; Solvang, Santa Barbara County, Calif.; Los Angeles, Los Angeles County, Calif. Born in Denmark, March 28, 1863. Naturalized U.S. citizen; farmer; inventor; candidate for U.S. Representative from Iowa 9th District, 1924. Danish ancestry. Patented several farm implements, including a wagon brake (1894), a corn-husking machine (1899), a hay-handling mechanism (1909), a manure spreader (1914), and a corn-planter dropper mechanism (1917). Died in Los Angeles County, Calif., April 21, 1944 (age 81 years, 24 days). Interment at Solvang Cemetery, Solvang, Calif.

Lawyer; farm implement dealer; helped develop Centennial Airport; ran a flying school; owned a ski resort; member of Colorado state house of representatives, 1959-63; member of Colorado state senate, 1963-67; candidate for U.S. Senator from Colorado, 1966; Colorado state treasurer, 1977-87; delegate to Democratic National Convention from Colorado, 1980, 1996, 2000, 2008; speaker, 1988; Governor of Colorado, 1987-99; Chairman of Democratic National Committee, 1997-99; school superintendent for Los Angeles, 2001-06; delegate to Democratic National Convention from California, 2004. Presbyterian. Still living as of 2014.

Served in the Union Army during the Civil War; livestock buyer; farmer; member of Dakota territorial House of Representatives, 1883; member of South Dakota state senate 10th District, 1901-02. Died in San Diego, San Diego County, Calif., March 27, 1916 (age 79 years, 187 days). Interment at Canistota Cemetery, Canistota, S.Dak.

The Political Graveyard

The Political Graveyard is a web site about U.S. political history and cemeteries. Founded in 1996, it is the Internet's most comprehensive free source for American political biography, listing 320,919 politicians, living and dead.
 
  The coverage of this site includes (1) the President, Vice President, members of Congress, elected state and territorial officeholders in all fifty states, the District of Columbia, and U.S. territories; and the chief elected official, typically the mayor, of qualifying municipalities; (2) candidates at election, including primaries, for any of the above; (3) all federal judges and all state appellate judges; (4) certain federal officials, including the federal cabinet, diplomatic chiefs of mission, consuls, U.S. district attorneys, collectors of customs and internal revenue, members of major federal commissions; and political appointee (pre-1969) postmasters of qualifying communities; (5) state and national political party officials, including delegates, alternate delegates, and other participants in national party nominating conventions; (6) Americans who served as "honorary" consuls for other nations before 1950. Note: municipalities or communities "qualify", for Political Graveyard purposes, if they have at least half a million person-years of history, inclusive of predecessor, successor, and merged entities.
