  Nathaniel Chipman (1752-1843) — of Tinmouth, Rutland County, Vt. Born in Salisbury, Litchfield County, Conn., November 15, 1752. Served in the Continental Army during the Revolutionary War; member of Vermont state house of representatives, 1784-85, 1806-09, 1811; justice of Vermont state supreme court, 1786, 1789-90, 1796, 1813-14; chief justice of Vermont Supreme Court, 1790-91, 1796-97, 1813-15; U.S. District Judge for Vermont, 1791; U.S. Senator from Vermont, 1797-1803. Died in Tinmouth, Rutland County, Vt., February 13, 1843 (age 90 years, 90 days). Interment at Tinmouth Cemetery, Tinmouth, Vt.
  Relatives: Brother of Lemuel Chipman and Daniel Chipman; father of Henry C. Chipman; grandfather of John Logan Chipman.

  Lemuel Chipman (1754-1831) — of Pawlet, Rutland County, Vt.; Ontario County, N.Y. Born in Salisbury, Litchfield County, Conn., July 25, 1754. Physician; served in the Continental Army during the Revolutionary War; candidate for Presidential Elector for Vermont; member of New York state assembly, 1796-97, 1800-01 (Ontario County 1796-97, Ontario and Steuben counties 1800-01); member of New York state senate Western District, 1801-05; member of New York council of appointment, 1802. Episcopalian. Died in Richmond, Ontario County, N.Y., April 28, 1831 (age 76 years, 277 days). Interment at West Avenue Cemetery, Canandaigua, N.Y.

  Daniel Chipman (1765-1850) — of Middlebury, Addison County, Vt.; Ripton, Addison County, Vt. Born in Salisbury, Litchfield County, Conn., October 22, 1765. Lawyer; delegate to Vermont state constitutional convention, 1793, 1814, 1836, 1843, 1850; member of Vermont state house of representatives, 1798-1808, 1812-14, 1818, 1821; Speaker of the Vermont State House of Representatives, 1813-14; member of Vermont Governor's Council, 1808; U.S. Representative from Vermont at-large, 1815-16. Died in Ripton, Addison County, Vt., April 23, 1850 (age 84 years, 183 days). Interment at West Cemetery, Middlebury, Vt.

  Henry C. Chipman (1784-1867) — of Walterboro, Colleton County, S.C.; Detroit, Wayne County, Mich. Born in Tinmouth, Rutland County, Vt., July 25, 1784. Whig. Lawyer; served in the U.S. Army during the War of 1812; newspaper editor; justice of Michigan territorial supreme court, 1827-32; Wayne County Criminal Court Judge, 1841-43. Episcopalian. Died in Detroit, Wayne County, Mich., May 31, 1867 (age 82 years, 310 days). Interment at Elmwood Cemetery, Detroit, Mich.

  John Logan Chipman (1830-1893) — also known as J. Logan Chipman — of Detroit, Wayne County, Mich. Born in Detroit, Wayne County, Mich., June 5, 1830. Democrat. Lawyer; member of Michigan state house of representatives from Wayne County 1st District, 1865-66; superior court judge in Michigan of Detroit, 1879-87; U.S. Representative from Michigan 1st District, 1887-93; defeated, 1866; died in office 1893; candidate for justice of Michigan state supreme court, 1891. Died in Detroit, Wayne County, Mich., August 17, 1893 (age 63 years, 73 days). Interment at Elmwood Cemetery, Detroit, Mich.

The Political Graveyard

The Political Graveyard is a web site about U.S. political history and cemeteries. Founded in 1996, it is the Internet's most comprehensive free source for American political biography, listing 320,919 politicians, living and dead.
 
  The coverage of this site includes (1) the President, Vice President, members of Congress, elected state and territorial officeholders in all fifty states, the District of Columbia, and U.S. territories; and the chief elected official, typically the mayor, of qualifying municipalities; (2) candidates at election, including primaries, for any of the above; (3) all federal judges and all state appellate judges; (4) certain federal officials, including the federal cabinet, diplomatic chiefs of mission, consuls, U.S. district attorneys, collectors of customs and internal revenue, members of major federal commissions; and political appointee (pre-1969) postmasters of qualifying communities; (5) state and national political party officials, including delegates, alternate delegates, and other participants in national party nominating conventions; (6) Americans who served as "honorary" consuls for other nations before 1950. Note: municipalities or communities "qualify", for Political Graveyard purposes, if they have at least half a million person-years of history, inclusive of predecessor, successor, and merged entities.
