Served in the Union Army during the Civil War; merchant; miller; member of Kansas state house of representatives, 1880; member of Missouri state senate 28th District, 1911-14. Burial location unknown.

  Nicholas Ford (1833-1897) — of Rochester, Andrew County, Mo.; Virginia City, Storey County, Nev.; Miltonvale, Cloud County, Kan. Born in Wicklow, County Wicklow, Ireland, June 21, 1833. Mining business; merchant; member of Missouri state house of representatives from Andrew County, 1875-76; U.S. Representative from Missouri 9th District, 1879-83; defeated (Republican), 1890; Republican candidate for Governor of Missouri, 1884. Died, from typhoid fever, in Miltonvale, Cloud County, Kan., June 18, 1897 (age 63 years, 362 days). Interment at Catholic Cemetery, Aurora, Kan.

  Bernard Anthony Gufler (1903-1973) — also known as Bernard Gufler — of Tacoma, Pierce County, Wash. Born in Lawrence, Douglas County, Kan., June 1, 1903. Wholesale merchant; school teacher; Foreign Service officer; U.S. Vice Consul in Vancouver, 1929-30; Riga, 1930-33; U.S. Ambassador to Ceylon, 1959-61; Finland, 1961-63. Died in 1973 (age about 70 years). Cremated.

  William Silas Hill (1886-1972) — also known as William S. Hill — of Fort Collins, Larimer County, Colo. Born in Corning, Nemaha County, Kan., January 20, 1886. Republican. School teacher; superintendent of schools; merchant; member of Colorado state legislature, 1920; secretary to Gov. Ralph Carr; U.S. Representative from Colorado 2nd District, 1941-59; defeated, 1938; delegate to Republican National Convention from Colorado, 1964. Presbyterian. Member, Farm Bureau; Rotary; Elks; Odd Fellows. Died in Fort Collins, Larimer County, Colo., August 28, 1972 (age 86 years, 221 days). Interment at Grandview Cemetery, Fort Collins, Colo.

  William Stevens Jay (1820-1892) — also known as William Jay — of Trenton, Mercer County, N.J.; Whitmore Lake, Washtenaw County, Mich.; Emporia, Lyon County, Kan. Born in Pennington, Mercer County, N.J., July 22, 1820. Republican. Merchant; member of New Jersey state house of assembly from Mercer County, 1855; delegate to Republican National Convention from New Jersey, 1856; member of Michigan state senate 7th District, 1863-65; mayor of Emporia, Kan., 1870. Died in Emporia, Lyon County, Kan., March 20, 1892 (age 71 years, 242 days). Interment at Maplewood Memorial Lawn Cemetery, Emporia, Kan.
  Relatives: Son of Smith Jay and Hannah (Wilson) Jay; married, June 7, 1841, to Jane A. Stevens.
  Jep Hansen Mailand (1848-1913) — of Kansas City, Wyandotte County, Kan. Born in Slesvig, Denmark, 1848. Brickmason; merchant; Vice-Consul for Denmark in Kansas City, Kan.-Mo., 1897-1907. Danish ancestry. Died in Kansas City, Wyandotte County, Kan., December 7, 1913 (age about 65 years). Interment at Mt. Hope Cemetery, Kansas City, Kan.
  Epitaph: "A faithfull loving husband and father / A true friend and and honorable citizen / Rest in Peace."

  Emery Lee Vassar (1887-1977) — also known as Emery L. Vassar — of Caldwell, Canyon County, Idaho. Born in Goodland, Sherman County, Kan., May 27, 1887. Republican. Merchant; mayor of Caldwell, Idaho, 1935; alternate delegate to Republican National Convention from Idaho, 1956. Died in Canyon County, Idaho, July 24, 1977 (age 90 years, 58 days). Interment at Canyon Hill Cemetery, Caldwell, Idaho.
  Relatives: Son of Euretta Eunice (Willson) Vassar and Samuel Hunter Vassar; married to Josephine Lee Spaeth; married, March 1, 1962, to Sarah Etta (Brown) West.

The Political Graveyard

The Political Graveyard is a web site about U.S. political history and cemeteries. Founded in 1996, it is the Internet's most comprehensive free source for American political biography, listing 320,919 politicians, living and dead.
 
  The coverage of this site includes (1) the President, Vice President, members of Congress, elected state and territorial officeholders in all fifty states, the District of Columbia, and U.S. territories; and the chief elected official, typically the mayor, of qualifying municipalities; (2) candidates at election, including primaries, for any of the above; (3) all federal judges and all state appellate judges; (4) certain federal officials, including the federal cabinet, diplomatic chiefs of mission, consuls, U.S. district attorneys, collectors of customs and internal revenue, members of major federal commissions; and political appointee (pre-1969) postmasters of qualifying communities; (5) state and national political party officials, including delegates, alternate delegates, and other participants in national party nominating conventions; (6) Americans who served as "honorary" consuls for other nations before 1950. Note: municipalities or communities "qualify", for Political Graveyard purposes, if they have at least half a million person-years of history, inclusive of predecessor, successor, and merged entities.
