Born in West Branch, Cedar County, Iowa, August 10, 1874. Republican. Mining engineer; candidate for Republican nomination for President, 1920; U.S. Secretary of Commerce, 1921-28; President of the United States, 1929-33; defeated, 1932; speaker, Republican National Convention, 1940, 1952, 1960. Quaker. Swiss and Dutch ancestry. Inducted into the National Mining Hall of Fame, Leadville, Colorado. Died, of intestinal cancer, in his suite at the Waldorf Towers Hotel, Manhattan, New York County, N.Y., October 20, 1964 (age 90 years, 71 days).
