Lawyer; member of New Hampshire state house of representatives, 1862-64, 1881; Speaker of the New Hampshire State House of Representatives, 1863-64; delegate to Republican National Convention from New Hampshire, 1868, 1880; member of Republican National Committee from New Hampshire, 1868-70, 1872-; delegate to New Hampshire state constitutional convention, 1876; U.S. Secretary of the Navy, 1882-85; U.S. Senator from New Hampshire, 1887-89, 1889-1901; delegate to New Hampshire state constitutional convention, 1902. Died in Concord, Merrimack County, N.H., November 30, 1917 (age 81 years, 337 days). United Church of Christ. Member, Freemasons; Grange. Died, in Pleasant View Nursing Home, Concord, Merrimack County, N.H., April 27, 2001 (age 89 years, 264 days).
