Member of Virginia state house of delegates, 1836-39, 1874-77; U.S. Representative from Virginia 17th District, 1841-43; candidate for Presidential Elector for Virginia; U.S. Secretary of the Interior, 1850-53; member of Virginia state senate, 1857-61; delegate to Virginia secession convention from Augusta County, 1861. Episcopalian. Slaveowner. Died in Staunton, Va., February 13, 1891 (age 83 years, 317 days). Interment at Thornrose Cemetery.

      James Hubert Price (1878-1943) — also known as James H. Price — of Virginia. Born in Greenbrier County, W.Va., September 7, 1878. Democrat. Member of Virginia state house of delegates, 1916-30; candidate for Presidential Elector for Virginia; Lieutenant Governor of Virginia, 1930-38; Governor of Virginia, 1938-42; delegate to Democratic National Convention from Virginia, 1940. Member, Freemasons; Shriners. Died in Richmond, Va., November 22, 1943 (age 65 years, 76 days). Interment at Thornrose Cemetery.
      The World War II Liberty ship SS James H. Price (built 1944 at Savannah, Georgia; scrapped 1964) was named for him.

      Jacob Yost (1853-1933) — of Staunton, Va.; Palo Alto, Santa Clara County, Calif. Born in Staunton, Va., April 1, 1853. Republican. Printer; civil engineer; mayor of Staunton, Va., 1886-87; U.S. Representative from Virginia 10th District, 1887-89, 1897-99; mining business. Died in Palo Alto, Santa Clara County, Calif., January 25, 1933 (age 79 years, 299 days). Interment at Thornrose Cemetery.

      John Brown Baldwin (1820-1873) — also known as John B. Baldwin — of Augusta County, Va. Born in Staunton, Va., January 11, 1820. Democrat. Member of Virginia state house of delegates, 1846, 1865; delegate to Virginia secession convention from Augusta County, 1861; colonel in the Confederate Army during the Civil War; Representative from Virginia in the Confederate Congress, 1862-65; delegate to Democratic National Convention from Virginia, 1872. Died September 30, 1873 (age 53 years, 262 days). Interment at Thornrose Cemetery.

      James Marshall Hanger (1833-1912) — also known as Marshall Hanger — Born near Waynesboro, Augusta County, Va., November 12, 1833. Lawyer; served in the Confederate Army during the Civil War; member of Virginia state house of delegates, 1869-76; Speaker of the Virginia State House of Delegates, 1876; U.S. Consul in Bermuda, 1894-98. Died, of intestinal paralysis and gangrene, in King's Daughters Hospital, Staunton, Va., August 26, 1912 (age 78 years, 288 days). Interment at Thornrose Cemetery.

      Stephen Davis Timberlake (1909-1995) — also known as Stephen D. Timberlake — of Staunton, Va. Born May 30, 1909. Republican. Lawyer; candidate for U.S. Representative from Virginia, 1948; alternate delegate to Republican National Convention from Virginia, 1952; candidate for Lieutenant Governor of Virginia, 1953. Presbyterian. Member, Lions; Delta Psi. Died June 18, 1995 (age 86 years, 19 days). Interment at Thornrose Cemetery.

    The Political Graveyard is a web site about U.S. political history and cemeteries. Founded in 1996, it is the Internet's most comprehensive free source for American political biography, listing 320,919 politicians, living and dead.
     
      The coverage of this site includes (1) the President, Vice President, members of Congress, elected state and territorial officeholders in all fifty states, the District of Columbia, and U.S. territories; and the chief elected official, typically the mayor, of qualifying municipalities; (2) candidates at election, including primaries, for any of the above; (3) all federal judges and all state appellate judges; (4) certain federal officials, including the federal cabinet, diplomatic chiefs of mission, consuls, U.S. district attorneys, collectors of customs and internal revenue, members of major federal commissions; and political appointee (pre-1969) postmasters of qualifying communities; (5) state and national political party officials, including delegates, alternate delegates, and other participants in national party nominating conventions; (6) Americans who served as "honorary" consuls for other nations before 1950. Note: municipalities or communities "qualify", for Political Graveyard purposes, if they have at least half a million person-years of history, inclusive of predecessor, successor, and merged entities.
