Lawyer; delegate to Oregon state constitutional convention from Yamhill County, 1857; member of Oregon state senate, 1860-62; U.S. Representative from Oregon at-large, 1863-65; justice of Idaho territorial supreme court, 1865-69; member of Republican National Committee from Idaho Territory, 1872-; member of Republican National Committee from Washington, 1880-92. Died in Spokane, Spokane County, Wash., July 20, 1904 (age 71 years, 333 days). Member of Oregon state house of representatives, 1882; secretary of state of Oregon, 1887-95; U.S. Senator from Oregon, 1895-1901. Died June 18, 1911 (age 57 years, 97 days). Note: municipalities or communities "qualify", for Political Graveyard purposes, if they have at least half a million person-years of history, inclusive of predecessor, successor, and merged entities.
