Fertilizer manufacturer; Lieutenant Governor of Delaware, 1945-49; Delaware Democratic state chair, 1946-47, 1955; delegate to Democratic National Convention from Delaware, 1948, 1952, 1956, 1960; Governor of Delaware, 1949-53, 1961-65; defeated, 1952; candidate for U.S. Senator from Delaware, 1958, 1964; candidate for Presidential Elector for Delaware. Episcopalian. Member, Freemasons; Shriners; Lions; Grange; Sigma Delta Kappa; Alpha Zeta. Died in Laurel, Sussex County, Del., February 6, 2005 (age 94 years, 363 days). Interment a private or family graveyard, Queen Anne's County, Md.
  Relatives: Son of Arnold Wrightson Carvel and Elizabeth (Nostrand) Carvel; married, December 17, 1932, to Ann Hall Valliant.

Cattle dealer; lumber dealer; U.S. Representative from Maryland 1st District, 1901-05, 1907-09. Methodist. Died in Salisbury, Wicomico County, Md., April 3, 1915 (age 75 years, 172 days). Interment at Parsons Cemetery, Salisbury, Md.
  Relatives: Son of Hugh Jackson; brother of Elihu Emory Jackson; married to Arabella Humphreys and Jennie Hmphreys; father of William Purnell Jackson; grandfather of William Newton Jackson.

  John R. Jewell (1914-1999) — of Chestertown, Kent County, Md. Born in Lynch, Kent County, Md., June 18, 1914. Democrat. Farm equipment dealer; member of Maryland state senate, 1950-57; alternate delegate to Democratic National Convention from Maryland, 1952; head, Maryland Department of Licensing and Regulation, 1970-76. Died in Boca Raton, Palm Beach County, Fla., January 22, 1999 (age 84 years, 218 days). Burial location unknown.

Born in Ogdensburg, Waupaca County, Wis., October 16, 1887. Republican. University professor; county agricultural extension agent; U.S. Representative from Wisconsin 7th District, 1939-52; died in office 1952. Died in Bethesda Naval Hospital, Bethesda, Montgomery County, Md., April 29, 1952 (age 64 years, 196 days). Interment at Park Cemetery, Near Ogdensburg, Waupaca County, Wis.

The Political Graveyard

The Political Graveyard is a web site about U.S. political history and cemeteries. Founded in 1996, it is the Internet's most comprehensive free source for American political biography, listing 320,919 politicians, living and dead.
 
  The coverage of this site includes (1) the President, Vice President, members of Congress, elected state and territorial officeholders in all fifty states, the District of Columbia, and U.S. territories; and the chief elected official, typically the mayor, of qualifying municipalities; (2) candidates at election, including primaries, for any of the above; (3) all federal judges and all state appellate judges; (4) certain federal officials, including the federal cabinet, diplomatic chiefs of mission, consuls, U.S. district attorneys, collectors of customs and internal revenue, members of major federal commissions; and political appointee (pre-1969) postmasters of qualifying communities; (5) state and national political party officials, including delegates, alternate delegates, and other participants in national party nominating conventions; (6) Americans who served as "honorary" consuls for other nations before 1950. Note: municipalities or communities "qualify", for Political Graveyard purposes, if they have at least half a million person-years of history, inclusive of predecessor, successor, and merged entities.  
  The listings are incomplete; development of the database is a continually ongoing project.
