  John Robert Tolbert (1834-1918) — also known as John R. Tolbert — of Abbeville County, S.C.; Greenwood, Abbeville County (now Greenwood County), S.C. Born June 16, 1834. Republican. Served in the Confederate Army during the Civil War; member of South Carolina state house of representatives from Abbeville County, 1872-74; candidate for U.S. Representative from South Carolina 3rd District, 1890, 1892; alternate delegate to Republican National Convention from South Carolina, 1896. Died January 19, 1918 (age 83 years, 217 days). Interment at Rehoboth United Methodist Church Cemetery, Greenwood, S.C.
  Relatives: Son of Robert Red Tolbert (1808-1866) and Elizabeth (Henderson) Tolbert; father of Robert Red Tolbert (1863-1938) and Joseph Warren Tolbert; granduncle of Hettie Elizabeth Tolbert.

Postmaster at Greenwood, S.C., 1884-85, 1889-94; delegate to Republican National Convention from South Carolina, 1896, 1900, 1908 (alternate), 1912, 1920 (member, Resolutions Committee), 1924 (member, Committee on Permanent Organization), 1928 (Convention Vice-President); candidate for U.S. Representative from South Carolina 3rd District, 1898. Died October 28, 1938 (age 75 years, 171 days). Interment a private or family graveyard, Abbeville County, S.C.
  Relatives: Son of John Robert Tolbert and Elizabeth Pope (Payne) Tolbert; brother of Joseph Warren Tolbert; father of Joseph Augustus Tolbert; first cousin once removed of Hettie Elizabeth Tolbert.

  Joseph Warren Tolbert (1865-1946) — also known as Joseph W. Tolbert; "Tieless Joe" — of Greenwood, Greenwood County, S.C.; Ninety Six, Greenwood County, S.C. Born in Abbeville District (now Abbeville County), S.C., June 6, 1865. Republican. Delegate to Republican National Convention from South Carolina, 1900 (alternate), 1908, 1912, 1916, 1920, 1924, 1928, 1936 (member, Committee to Notify Presidential Nominee); member of Republican National Committee from South Carolina, 1912-24; South Carolina Republican state chair, 1925-31. Hit by a car (perhaps intentionally), in his front yard, and died soon after, in Ninety Six, Greenwood County, S.C., October 18, 1946 (age 81 years, 134 days). Interment at Elmwood Cemetery, Ninety Six, S.C.

Lawyer; U.S. Attorney for the Western District of South Carolina, 1923-33; delegate to Republican National Convention from South Carolina, 1924, 1928 (member, Credentials Committee), 1936; candidate for U.S. Senator from South Carolina, 1936; candidate for Governor of South Carolina, 1938. Died from a self-inflicted gunshot, in Greenville, Greenville County, S.C., March 22, 1940 (age 48 years, 166 days). Interment a private or family graveyard, Abbeville County, S.C.

  John Oliver Gunn (1892-1992) — also known as J. O. Gunn — of Yanceyville, Caswell County, N.C. Born in Pelham, Caswell County, N.C., December 27, 1892. Democrat. Farmer; automobile dealer; banker; Caswell County Treasurer, 1936-40; chair of Caswell County Democratic Party, 1942-45; member of North Carolina state house of representatives, 1945-57, 1965-67; secretary, Royal Hosiery Mills. Methodist. Member, Freemasons; Scottish Rite Masons; Shriners; Order of the Eastern Star; Rotary; Junior Order. Died, in Memorial Hospital, Danville, Va., February 18, 1992 (age 99 years, 53 days). Interment at Yanceyville United Methodist Church Cemetery, Yanceyville, N.C.
  Relatives: Son of Richard Griffin Gunn and Nannie Elizabeth (Rudd) Gunn; married to Annie Warner Newman; first cousin of John Henry Gunn (who married Hettie Elizabeth Tolbert).

Born in South Carolina, March 27, 1893. Republican. School teacher; postmaster at Greenwood, S.C., 1924-30. Female. Died, from a cerebral hemorrhage, in Yanceyville, Caswell County, N.C., December 18, 1958 (age 65 years, 266 days). Interment at Prospect United Methodist Church Cemetery, Yanceyville, N.C.
  Relatives: Daughter of Laura Josephine (Crisp) Tolbert and George Whitfield Tolbert; married, December 29, 1938, to John Henry Gunn (first cousin of John Oliver Gunn); grandniece of John Robert Tolbert; first cousin once removed of Robert Red Tolbert and Joseph Warren Tolbert.

The Political Graveyard is a web site about U.S. political history and cemeteries. Founded in 1996, it is the Internet's most comprehensive free source for American political biography, listing 320,919 politicians, living and dead.
 
  The coverage of this site includes (1) the President, Vice President, members of Congress, elected state and territorial officeholders in all fifty states, the District of Columbia, and U.S. territories; and the chief elected official, typically the mayor, of qualifying municipalities; (2) candidates at election, including primaries, for any of the above; (3) all federal judges and all state appellate judges; (4) certain federal officials, including the federal cabinet, diplomatic chiefs of mission, consuls, U.S. district attorneys, collectors of customs and internal revenue, members of major federal commissions; and political appointee (pre-1969) postmasters of qualifying communities; (5) state and national political party officials, including delegates, alternate delegates, and other participants in national party nominating conventions; (6) Americans who served as "honorary" consuls for other nations before 1950. Note: municipalities or communities "qualify", for Political Graveyard purposes, if they have at least half a million person-years of history, inclusive of predecessor, successor, and merged entities.
