Served in the Union Army during the Civil War; lawyer; Kalamazoo County Prosecuting Attorney; U.S. Representative from Michigan, 1873-75, 1879-83, 1885-95 (4th District 1873-75, 1879-83, 1885-93, 3rd District 1893-95); defeated, 1874, 1882; resigned 1895; delegate to Republican National Convention from Michigan, 1884; U.S. Senator from Michigan, 1895-1911; defeated in primary, 1910. Died in Kalamazoo, Kalamazoo County, Mich., November 16, 1915 (age 78 years, 311 days). Interment at Mountain Home Cemetery, Kalamazoo, Mich.

Lawyer; mayor of Kalamazoo, Mich., 1913-15; alternate delegate to Republican National Convention from Michigan, 1916. Died in Plainwell, Allegan County, Mich., April 4, 1951 (age 79 years, 168 days). Interment at Mountain Home Cemetery, Kalamazoo, Mich.

Member of University of Michigan board of regents, 1942-57; defeated, 1957. Presbyterian. Member, Rotary; Pi Delta Epsilon; Alpha Kappa Psi; Delta Kappa Epsilon. Died in Kalamazoo, Kalamazoo County, Mich., November 16, 1999 (age 95 years, 269 days). Interment at Mountain Home Cemetery, Kalamazoo, Mich.
