Farmer; banker; insurance business; telephone business; member of Vermont state house of representatives, 1900-01, 1915-16, 1931-33; member of Vermont state senate, 1917-19; Lieutenant Governor of Vermont, 1921-23; delegate to Republican National Convention from Vermont, 1928 (member, Committee to Notify Vice-Presidential Nominee). Died in Middlebury, Addison County, Vt., May 14, 1941 (age 78 years, 202 days). Interment at Evergreen Cemetery, West Cornwall, Cornwall, Vt.
  Relatives: Son of Rollin Abram Foote and Julia Arabella (Sampson) Foote; married, December 18, 1883, to Kate Dodge Nichols; grandfather of Ralph Albert Foote.

  Charles Winslow Gates (1856-1927) — also known as Charles W. Gates — of Franklin, Franklin County, Vt. Born in Franklin, Franklin County, Vt., January 12, 1856. Republican. Farmer; school teacher; merchant; member of Vermont state house of representatives, 1899-1900; member of Vermont state senate, 1901-02; Governor of Vermont, 1915-17; candidate for U.S. Senator from Vermont, 1916; founder and president, Franklin Telephone Co. Congregationalist. Died in Franklin, Franklin County, Vt., July 1, 1927 (age 71 years, 170 days). Interment at Maple Grove Cemetery, Franklin, Vt.
  Relatives: Son of Harrison Gates and Loena Rebecca (Shedd) Gates; married, April 9, 1890, to Mary Elizabeth Hayden.

  Frank B. Gillett (b. 1850) — of Jonesville, Richmond, Chittenden County, Vt. Born in Richmond, Chittenden County, Vt., November 10, 1850. Democrat. Grain dealer; telephone business; member of Vermont state house of representatives from Richmond, 1910. Universalist. Burial location unknown.
John L. Stevens John Loomis Stevens (1850-1933) — also known as John L. Stevens — of Ames, Story County, Iowa; Boone, Boone County, Iowa. Born in Northfield, Washington County, Vt., May 29, 1850. Lawyer; district attorney 11th District, 1879-86; promoter of early telephone companies; organizer, Boone Brick and Tile Paving Company; district judge in Iowa 11th District, 1887-92; delegate to Republican National Convention from Iowa, 1900, 1912; delegate to Progressive National Convention from Iowa, 1912; Progressive candidate for Governor of Iowa, 1912. Member, Freemasons; Knights Templar. Died in Iowa, October 23, 1933 (age 83 years, 147 days). Interment at Ames Municipal Cemetery, Ames, Iowa.
  Relatives: Son of Isaac Loomis Stevens and Harriet E. (Tucker) Stevens; married, August 10, 1876, to Rowena Estelle Edson.

  Theodore Newton Vail (1845-1920) — also known as Theodore N. Vail — of Lyndonville, Lyndon, Caledonia County, Vt. Born in Minerva, Stark County, Ohio, July 16, 1845. Republican. General superintendent, U.S. Railway Mail Service, 1876-79; president, American Telephone and Telegraph Co., 1885-89 and 1907-19; founder of Western Electric and of Bell Labs; built an electric railway system in Buenos Aires, Argentina, 1890-1904; farmer; delegate to Republican National Convention from Vermont, 1916. Member, Union League. Died, from kidney and cardiac complications, in Johns Hopkins Hospital, Baltimore, Md., April 16, 1920 (age 74 years, 275 days). Interment at Vail Memorial Cemetery, Parsippany, N.J.
  Relatives: Son of Davis Vail and Phebe (Quinby) Vail; married, August 3, 1869, to Emma Louisa Righter; married, July 27, 1907, to Mabel Rutledge Sanderson; first cousin of George Vail.

The Political Graveyard

The Political Graveyard is a web site about U.S. political history and cemeteries. Founded in 1996, it is the Internet's most comprehensive free source for American political biography, listing 320,919 politicians, living and dead.
 
  The coverage of this site includes (1) the President, Vice President, members of Congress, elected state and territorial officeholders in all fifty states, the District of Columbia, and U.S. territories; and the chief elected official, typically the mayor, of qualifying municipalities; (2) candidates at election, including primaries, for any of the above; (3) all federal judges and all state appellate judges; (4) certain federal officials, including the federal cabinet, diplomatic chiefs of mission, consuls, U.S. district attorneys, collectors of customs and internal revenue, members of major federal commissions; and political appointee (pre-1969) postmasters of qualifying communities; (5) state and national political party officials, including delegates, alternate delegates, and other participants in national party nominating conventions; (6) Americans who served as "honorary" consuls for other nations before 1950. Note: municipalities or communities "qualify", for Political Graveyard purposes, if they have at least half a million person-years of history, inclusive of predecessor, successor, and merged entities.  
  The listings are incomplete; development of the database is a continually ongoing project.
