Lawyer; U.S. Attorney for Dakota Territory, 1888-89; delegate to North Dakota state constitutional convention from Richland County, 1889; Richland County State's Attorney, 1889-91; member of Democratic National Committee from North Dakota, 1889; delegate to Democratic National Convention from North Dakota, 1892, 1912 (member, Platform and Resolutions Committee; speaker), 1916 (member, Platform and Resolutions Committee); member of North Dakota state senate, 1906-10; U.S. Senator from North Dakota, 1910-11; defeated, 1914. Catholic. Died in 1928 (age about 71 years). Interment at Calvary Cemetery.   Relatives: Son of Joseph Purcell and Johanna (Duggan) Purcell; married, April 3, 1889, to Myra E. Died of a heart attack, in a hotel at Bismarck, Burleigh County, N.Dak., January 27, 1957 (age 45 years, 85 days). Interment at Wahpeton Memorial Gardens Cemetery.
