Naturalized U.S. citizen; newspaper publisher; member of South Dakota state house of representatives 10th District, 1893-94; U.S. Consul in Beirut, 1898-1905; Dawson, 1905-06; U.S. Consul General in Beirut, 1906-10; Constantinople, 1910-17, 1919-24; St. Nazaire, 1917-18; Nantes, 1918-19; Zurich, as of 1926-27; Hamburg, as of 1929; Berlin, 1930. Lutheran. Norwegian ancestry. Died in Orlando, Orange County, Fla., March 23, 1950 (age 83 years, 274 days). Interment at Highland Prairie Lutheran Church Cemetery, Near Peterson, Fillmore County, Minn.

Wilhelm Christian Magelssen (1873-1919) — also known as William C. Magelssen — of Bratsberg, Fillmore County, Minn. Born in Bratsberg, Fillmore County, Minn., October 19, 1873. U.S. Vice & Deputy Consul in Beirut, 1899-1905; in Beirut, in August 1903, he was shot at but not injured; press reports incorrectly reported that he was dead; U.S. Vice & Deputy Consul General in Beirut, 1905-06; U.S. Consul in Baghdad, 1906-09; Colombo, 1909-11; Melbourne, 1911-17. Lutheran. Norwegian ancestry. Member, Freemasons. Died, from heart disease, on board the steamship Sonoma, in the North Pacific Ocean, October 17, 1919 (age 45 years, 363 days). Interment at Highland Prairie Lutheran Church Cemetery, Near Peterson, Fillmore County, Minn.

Christian Magelssen Ravndal (1899-1984) — also known as Christian M. Ravndal — of Iowa. Born in Beirut, Syria (now Lebanon) of American parents, January 6, 1899. Served in the U.S. Army during World War I; Foreign Service officer; U.S. Vice Consul in Vienna, as of 1922-24; U.S. Consul in Frankfort, 1924-26; Cologne, 1928-29; Toronto, 1929-30; Vancouver, 1935-37; Buenos Aires, as of 1938; Stockholm, 1943-47; U.S. Ambassador to Uruguay, 1949-51; Ecuador, 1956-60; Czechoslovakia, 1960-61; U.S. Minister to Hungary, 1951-56. Norwegian ancestry. Died in Vienna, Austria, November 6, 1984 (age 85 years, 305 days). Interment at Friedhof Hietzing, Vienna, Austria.
