Member of Virginia state house of delegates, 1948-52; member of Virginia state senate 5th District, 1952-61; Lieutenant Governor of Virginia, 1962-66; Governor of Virginia, 1966-70, 1974-78. Christian. Member, Knights of Pythias; Freemasons; Shriners; Moose; Rotary. Died of complications of pneumonia, January 30, 1999 (age 84 years, 72 days). Interment at Cedar Hill Cemetery.

      Edward Everett Holland (1861-1941) — also known as Edward E. Holland; E. E. Holland — of Suffolk, Va. Born in Nansemond County, Va. (now part of Suffolk, Va.), February 26, 1861. Democrat. Lawyer; banker; mayor of Suffolk, Va., 1885-87; Nansemond County Commonwealth Attorney, 1887-1907; member of Virginia state senate, 1908-11, 1930-41 (30th District 1908-11, 5th District 1930-41); died in office 1941; U.S. Representative from Virginia 2nd District, 1911-21; delegate to Democratic National Convention from Virginia, 1920, 1924 (member, Committee on Rules and Order of Business). Died in Suffolk, Va., October 23, 1941 (age 80 years, 239 days). Interment at Cedar Hill Cemetery.

      Junius Edgar West (1866-1947) — also known as Junius E. West — of Waverly, Sussex County, Va.; Suffolk, Va. Born near Waverly, Sussex County, Va., July 12, 1866. Democrat. Superintendent of schools; insurance business; lawyer; newspaper publisher; delegate to Democratic National Convention from Virginia, 1896, 1936; member of Virginia state house of delegates from Nansemond County, 1910-11; member of Virginia state senate 30th District, 1912-21; Lieutenant Governor of Virginia, 1922-30. Christian. Member, Freemasons; Knights Templar; Shriners; Knights of Pythias; Odd Fellows; Elks; Rotary; Junior Order; Sons of the American Revolution. Died, of cancer, in a hospital at Richmond, Va., January 1, 1947 (age 80 years, 173 days). Interment at Cedar Hill Cemetery.
      Relatives: Son of Henry Thomas West and Susan (Cockes) West; brother of Jesse Felix West; married, February 17, 1903, to Margaret Olive Beale.

    The Political Graveyard

    The Political Graveyard is a web site about U.S. political history and cemeteries. Founded in 1996, it is the Internet's most comprehensive free source for American political biography, listing 320,919 politicians, living and dead.
     
      The coverage of this site includes (1) the President, Vice President, members of Congress, elected state and territorial officeholders in all fifty states, the District of Columbia, and U.S. territories; and the chief elected official, typically the mayor, of qualifying municipalities; (2) candidates at election, including primaries, for any of the above; (3) all federal judges and all state appellate judges; (4) certain federal officials, including the federal cabinet, diplomatic chiefs of mission, consuls, U.S. district attorneys, collectors of customs and internal revenue, members of major federal commissions; and political appointee (pre-1969) postmasters of qualifying communities; (5) state and national political party officials, including delegates, alternate delegates, and other participants in national party nominating conventions; (6) Americans who served as "honorary" consuls for other nations before 1950. Note: municipalities or communities "qualify", for Political Graveyard purposes, if they have at least half a million person-years of history, inclusive of predecessor, successor, and merged entities.  
      The listings are incomplete; development of the database is a continually ongoing project.
