      Abraham Ellison Garrett (1830-1907) — of Tennessee. Born near Livingston, Overton County, Tenn., March 6, 1830. Democrat. Lawyer; colonel in the Union Army during the Civil War; delegate to Tennessee state constitutional convention, 1865; member of Tennessee state house of representatives, 1865-66; U.S. Representative from Tennessee 3rd District, 1871-73. Died in Carthage, Smith County, Tenn., February 14, 1907 (age 76 years, 345 days). Interment at Carthage Cemetery.

Slaveowner. Died in Hot Springs, Garland County, Ark., October 23, 1875 (age 59 years, 133 days). Original interment at Carthage Cemetery; reinterment in 1908 at Mt. Olivet Cemetery, Nashville, Tenn.

U.S. Representative from Tennessee 4th District, 1939-44, 1945-53; served in the U.S. Army during World War II; U.S. Senator from Tennessee, 1953-71; defeated, 1970; candidate for Democratic nomination for Vice President, 1956. Baptist. Died in Carthage, Smith County, Tenn., December 5, 1998 (age 90 years, 344 days). Interment at Smith County Memorial Gardens.
      Relatives: Son of Allen Gore and Margie Betty (Denny) Gore; married, April 17, 1937, to Pauline LaFon; father of Albert Arnold Gore Jr. (who married Tipper Gore); first cousin once removed of Mary Benton Gore (who married Gordon Evans Dean); second cousin of Louise Gore.

    The Political Graveyard

    The Political Graveyard is a web site about U.S. political history and cemeteries. Founded in 1996, it is the Internet's most comprehensive free source for American political biography, listing 320,919 politicians, living and dead.
     
      The coverage of this site includes (1) the President, Vice President, members of Congress, elected state and territorial officeholders in all fifty states, the District of Columbia, and U.S. territories; and the chief elected official, typically the mayor, of qualifying municipalities; (2) candidates at election, including primaries, for any of the above; (3) all federal judges and all state appellate judges; (4) certain federal officials, including the federal cabinet, diplomatic chiefs of mission, consuls, U.S. district attorneys, collectors of customs and internal revenue, members of major federal commissions; and political appointee (pre-1969) postmasters of qualifying communities; (5) state and national political party officials, including delegates, alternate delegates, and other participants in national party nominating conventions; (6) Americans who served as "honorary" consuls for other nations before 1950. Note: municipalities or communities "qualify", for Political Graveyard purposes, if they have at least half a million person-years of history, inclusive of predecessor, successor, and merged entities.  
      The listings are incomplete; development of the database is a continually ongoing project.
