Born near Swansboro, Onslow County, N.C., about 1775. Ship captain; privateer during the War of 1812; shipbuilder; planter; member of North Carolina house of commons, 1821-22, 1824-27, 1832; member of North Carolina state senate, 1828-30, 1834; lighthouse keeper at the Brant Island Shoal Light, 1835-50. Died in Portsmouth, Carteret County, N.C., August 25, 1850 (age about 75 years). Died January 29, 1947 (age 78 years, 58 days). Interment at West Burnsville Church Cemetery.   Relatives: Son of James W. Gibbs and Mary (Robinson) Gibbs; married 1890 to Elizabeth Lyde 'Lizzie' Dillinger.

Note: municipalities or communities "qualify", for Political Graveyard purposes, if they have at least half a million person-years of history, inclusive of predecessor, successor, and merged entities.
