Lawyer; newspaper editor; Jefferson County Commonwealth Attorney, 1833-35; U.S. Commissioner of Patents, 1857; U.S. Postmaster General, 1859-60; U.S. Secretary of War, 1861. Died in Washington, D.C., August 1, 1894 (age 87 years, 207 days). Interment in a private or family graveyard.   Relatives: Son of John W. Holt and Eleanor K. (Stephens) Holt; brother of J. J. Died, of appendicitis, October 24, 1913 (age 49 years, 10 days). Interment at Old Hardinsburg Cemetery.

Note: municipalities or communities "qualify", for Political Graveyard purposes, if they have at least half a million person-years of history, inclusive of predecessor, successor, and merged entities.
