Great-great-great-grandson of Archibald Bulloch; grandnephew of Robert Barnwell Roosevelt; son of Theodore Roosevelt and Edith Kermit (Carow) Roosevelt; half-brother of Alice Lee Roosevelt (who married Nicholas Longworth); married, June 20, 1910, to Eleanor Butler Alexander. Republican. Farmer; colonel in the U.S. Army during World War I; member of New York state assembly from Nassau County 2nd District, 1920-21; delegate to Republican National Convention from New York, 1924, 1928, 1940; candidate for Governor of New York, 1924; Governor of Puerto Rico, 1929-32; general in the U.S. Army during World War II. Member, American Legion. Principal founder of the American Legion in 1919. Participated in the invasion of Nazi-occupied France, on D-Day, June 6, 1944, and received a posthumous Medal of Honor for his actions that day; died a month later, of exhaustion and heart failure, in Normandy, France, July 12, 1944. Interment at Normandy American Cemetery.

Born in Christiansted, St. Croix, Virgin Islands, August 6, 1811. Son of Philip Benjamin and Rebecca (de Mendes) Benjamin; cousin of Henry Michael Hyams; married 1833 to Natalie St. Martin. Lawyer; member of Louisiana state house of representatives, 1842-44; delegate to Louisiana state constitutional convention, 1845; Presidential Elector for Louisiana, 1848; U.S. Senator from Louisiana, 1853-61; Confederate Attorney General, 1861; Confederate Secretary of War, 1861-62; Confederate Secretary of State, 1862-65. Jewish. His portrait appeared on the Confederate States two-dollar note in 1861-64. He fled to Europe in 1865 to avoid arrest by Union forces; he was suspected of involvement in the assassination of President Abraham Lincoln. Fell from a tram car about 1880, and suffered multiple injuries; also developed kidney and heart problems, and died in Paris, France, May 6, 1884. Interment at Père la Chaise Cemetery.
