Lawyer; candidate for Governor of Texas, 1924; Puerto Rico attorney general, 1925; Governor-General of the Philippine Islands, 1932. Baptist. Member, Freemasons; American Society for International Law; American Law Institute; Alpha Tau Omega; Delta Theta Phi. Died, following surgery for an intestinal blockage, in American Hospital, Mexico City (Ciudad de México), Distrito Federal, January 18, 1940 (age 62 years, 254 days). Interment at Live Oak Cemetery.
      Relatives: Son of Charles Felix Butte and Lena Clara (Stoes) Butte; married, August 21, 1898, to Bertha Lattimore (1878-1926).

      Sam Morris Russell (1889-1971) — also known as Sam M. Russell — of Stephenville, Erath County, Tex. Born near Stephenville, Erath County, Tex., August 9, 1889. Democrat. Served in the U.S. Army during World War I; state court judge in Texas, 1928-40; U.S. Representative from Texas 17th District, 1941-47. Died in Stephenville, Erath County, Tex., October 19, 1971 (age 82 years, 71 days). Interment at East Memorial Cemetery.
