Lawyer; district judge in Iowa 11th District, 1893-1900; U.S. Representative from Iowa 3rd District, 1903-09. Most sources give his date of death as May 26, 1917, but his New York Times obituary and the Iowa cemetery record (WPA transcription) contradict this. Died in Clarion, Wright County, Iowa, May 16, 1916 (age 57 years, 203 days).
