Born in Anderson, Anderson County, S.C., August 11, 1912. Democrat. Served in the U.S. Navy during World War II; Lieutenant Governor of South Carolina, 1947-55; delegate to Democratic National Convention from South Carolina, 1948, 1956; Governor of South Carolina, 1955-59; candidate for Democratic nomination for President, 1956; circuit judge in South Carolina, 1967-84. Died in Batesburg-Leesville, Lexington County, S.C., November 29, 1994 (age 82 years, 110 days). Interment at Batesburg Cemetery, Batesburg-Leesville, S.C.
  Relatives: Son of Mary (Sullivan) Timmerman (1881-1948) and George Bell Timmerman, Sr. (1881-1966); married to Helen Timmerman.
