Lawyer; Michigan Republican state chair, 1913; Michigan state attorney general, 1917-20; Governor of Michigan, 1921-26; defeated in primary, 1914, 1926, 1930, 1934; delegate to Republican National Convention from Michigan, 1924, 1944. Dutch and French ancestry. Died March 10, 1953 (age 79 years, 123 days). Interment at Woodlawn Cemetery, Detroit, Mich.
