Lawyer; member of Illinois state house of representatives, 1843, 1861; served in the U.S. Army during the Mexican War; Presidential Elector for Illinois, 1848; county judge in Illinois, 1849-57; delegate to Illinois state constitutional convention Montgomery and Christian counties, 1862; member of Illinois state senate, 1863; circuit judge in Illinois, 1870-79; delegate to Democratic National Convention from Illinois, 1880 (Convention Vice-President). Died in Taylorville, Christian County, Ill., March 12, 1894 (age 78 years, 0 days). Interment at Oak Hill Cemetery, Taylorville, Ill.
  Relatives: Son of Aaron Vandeveer (1785-1857) and Nancy (French) Vandeveer (1789-1871); married to Mary Jane Rucker (1827-1914); father of William Thomas Vandeveer; nephew of Joel Vandeveer (1791-1874).
