Methodist. Died in Raleigh, Wake County, N.C., January 15, 1948 (age 85 years, 242 days). Interment at Oakwood Cemetery, Raleigh, N.C.; statue at Nash Square, Raleigh, N.C.

Newspaper editor; member of Democratic National Committee from North Carolina, 1930; White House press secretary in 1945, for presidents Franklin Roosevelt and Harry Truman; delegate to Democratic National Convention from North Carolina, 1948, 1952 (member, Credentials Committee), 1956, 1964. Died in Hilton Head Island, Beaufort County, S.C., November 6, 1981 (age 79 years, 193 days). Interment at Six Oaks Cemetery, Sea Pines Plantation, Hilton Head Island, S.C.
