Lawyer; U.S. Representative from Ohio 8th District, 1845-47; justice of Ohio state supreme court, 1852-56; delegate to Democratic National Convention from Ohio, 1864; candidate for Governor of Ohio, 1867; U.S. Senator from Ohio, 1869-81; candidate for Democratic nomination for President, 1884; candidate for Vice President of the United States, 1888. Died in Columbus, Franklin County, Ohio, December 12, 1895 (age 82 years, 29 days).
