Lawyer; member of Texas state house of representatives, 1969-78; Speaker of the Texas State House of Representatives, 1973; delegate to Texas state constitutional convention, 1974; candidate in primary for Texas state attorney general, 1978. Shot and killed by his estranged wife, Vickie, near Liberty, Liberty County, Tex., January 19, 1981 (age 39 years, 225 days). She was arrested and indicted for his murder, but found not guilty at trial.
