County judge in Wisconsin, 1860-62; member of Wisconsin state senate, 1862-63; circuit judge in Wisconsin 8th Circuit, 1866-77; U.S. Representative from Wisconsin 7th District, 1877-83; member of Wisconsin state assembly, 1887. Died in Hudson, St. Croix County, Wis., June 10, 1902 (age 72 years, 88 days). Interment at Willow River Cemetery.

      James B. Hughes (1805-1873) — of Meigs County, Ohio; St. Paul, Ramsey County, Minn.; Hudson, St. Croix County, Wis. Born in Prince Edward County, Va., October 12, 1805. Son of Simon Hughes (1778-1858) and Betsy Coleman (Bigger) Hughes (1780-1851). Lawyer; newspaper publisher; member of Ohio state legislature, 1838-39; served in the U.S. Army during the Mexican War. Presbyterian. Died in Hudson, St. Croix County, Wis., August 11, 1873 (age 67 years, 303 days). Interment at Willow River Cemetery.
      Relatives: Married, September 4, 1838, to Elizabeth Mather (1816-1893).

Son of Franklin Nye and Eliza Mitchell (Loring) Nye. Republican. Lawyer; member of Wisconsin state assembly, 1885; U.S. Representative from Minnesota 5th District, 1907-13; district judge in Minnesota, 1920-32. Died in Minneapolis, Hennepin County, Minn., November 29, 1935 (age 83 years, 267 days). Interment at Greenwood Cemetery.
      Relatives: Great-grandson of Bartlett Nye; third cousin thrice removed of Hezekiah Nye and Thomas Nye; son of Franklin Nye and Eliza Mitchell (Loring) Nye; married, March 27, 1876, to Carrie Maria Wilson. See Nye family of Massachusetts.

    The Political Graveyard is a web site about U.S. political history and cemeteries. Founded in 1996, it is the Internet's most comprehensive free source for American political biography, listing 234,420 politicians, living and dead.
     
      The coverage of the site includes (1) the President, Vice President, members of Congress, elected state and territorial officeholders in all fifty states, the District of Columbia, and U.S. territories; and the chief elected official, typically the mayor, of qualifying municipalities; (2) candidates at election, including primaries, for any of the above; (3) all federal judges and all state appellate judges; (4) certain federal officials, including the federal cabinet, diplomatic chiefs of mission, consuls, U.S. district attorneys, collectors of customs and internal revenue, and members of major federal commissions; and (5) state and national political party officials, including delegates, alternate delegates, and other participants in national party nominating conventions.  
      The listings are incomplete; development of the database is a continually ongoing project.
