Went to California for the 1849 Gold Rush; member Utah territorial council, 1865-66, 1869-72; Delegate to U.S. Congress from Utah Territory, 1873-81. Mormon. Had five wives and 32 children; spent six months in federal penitentiary for cohabitation. Died in Monterey, Monterey County, Calif., April 12, 1901. Interment at Salt Lake City Cemetery.
