Francis Marion (1732-1795) — also known as "Swamp Fox" — of South Carolina. Born in 1732. Served in the Continental Army during the Revolutionary War; member of South Carolina state senate, 1782-90. Died February 27, 1795. Interment at Belle Isle Plantation. Marion counties in Ala., Ark., Fla., Ga., Ill., Ind., Iowa, Kan., Ky., Miss., Mo., Ohio, Ore., S.C., Tenn., Tex. and W.Va. are named for him.

Died January 1, 1787. Entombed in mausoleum at Middleton Place Plantation.

Member of South Carolina state house of representatives, 1802; member of South Carolina state senate, 1810; Governor of South Carolina, 1810-12; U.S. Representative from South Carolina 1st District, 1815-19; U.S. Minister to Russia, 1820-30. Died June 14, 1846. Entombed in mausoleum at Middleton Place Plantation.

Merchant; planter; Vice-President of South Carolina, 1776-77; Delegate to Continental Congress from South Carolina, 1777-80. Member, Freemasons; American Philosophical Society. Died in Berkeley County, S.C., December 8, 1792. Cremated; ashes interred at Mepkin Abbey. Laurens County, S.C. is named for him.

Clare Boothe Luce (1903-1987) — also known as Ann Clare Boothe — of Greenwich, Fairfield County, Conn.; Ridgefield, Fairfield County, Conn. Born in New York, New York County, N.Y., April 10, 1903. Daughter of William F. Boothe and Ann (Snyder) Boothe; step-daughter of Albert Elmer Austin; married, August 10, 1923, to George Tuttle Brokaw (divorced 1929); married, November 23, 1935, to Henry Robinson Luce (1898-1967; founder and publisher of Time, Life, and other magazines); mother of Ann Clare Brokaw (1924-1944; killed in automobile accident). Republican. Writer; journalist; U.S. Representative from Connecticut 4th District, 1943-47; delegate to Republican National Convention from Connecticut, 1944, 1948, 1952; U.S. Ambassador to Italy, 1953-56. Female. Catholic. Received the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1983. Died, from a brain tumor, in Washington, D.C., October 9, 1987. Interment at Mepkin Abbey.
