Served in the U.S. Army during the Spanish-American War; dentist; lawyer; member of Missouri state house of representatives, 1913-15; U.S. Representative from Missouri 13th District, 1923-25. Died in Kansas City, Jackson County, Mo., February 27, 1958 (age 79 years, 258 days). Interment at Gamel Cemetery.

      Daniel Dunklin (1790-1844) — of Washington County, Mo. Born in Greenville, Greenville County, S.C., January 14, 1790. Democrat. Lieutenant Governor of Missouri, 1828-32; Governor of Missouri, 1832-36. Died of pneumonia, August 25, 1844 (age 54 years, 224 days). Interment at Daniel Dunklin Grave State Historic Site.
      Dunklin County, Mo. is named for him.

Lawyer; U.S. Representative from Missouri, 1927-29, 1931-43 (13th District 1927-29, 1931-33, at-large 1933-35, 8th District 1935-43); defeated, 1942; delegate to Democratic National Convention from Missouri, 1928. Died in 1954 (age about 80 years). Interment at Hillsboro Cemetery.

      Norvell William Emerson (1938-1996) — also known as Bill Emerson — of De Soto, Jefferson County, Mo.; Cape Girardeau, Cape Girardeau County, Mo. Born in St. Louis, Mo., January 1, 1938. Son of Norvell Preston Emerson and Marie (Reinemer) Emerson. Republican. U.S. Representative from Missouri, 1981-96 (10th District 1981-83, 8th District 1983-96); died in office 1996. Presbyterian. Died of lung cancer, at Bethesda Naval Hospital, Bethesda, Montgomery County, Md., June 22, 1996 (age 58 years, 173 days). Interment at Hillsboro Cemetery.

      Samuel Byrns (1848-1914) — of Missouri. Born in Jefferson County, Mo., March 4, 1848. Son of Thomas Byrns and Margaret (Bowles) Byrns. Democrat. Lawyer; member of Missouri state house of representatives, 1876-77; member of Missouri state senate, 1878; member of Missouri Democratic State Central Committee, 1886-88; U.S. Representative from Missouri 10th District, 1891-93. Died, from a cerebral hemorrhage, in De Soto, Jefferson County, Mo., July 9, 1914 (age 66 years, 127 days). Interment at Hillsboro Cemetery.

    The Political Graveyard

    The Political Graveyard is a web site about U.S. political history and cemeteries. Founded in 1996, it is the Internet's most comprehensive free source for American political biography, listing 234,420 politicians, living and dead.
     
      The coverage of the site includes (1) the President, Vice President, members of Congress, elected state and territorial officeholders in all fifty states, the District of Columbia, and U.S. territories; and the chief elected official, typically the mayor, of qualifying municipalities; (2) candidates at election, including primaries, for any of the above; (3) all federal judges and all state appellate judges; (4) certain federal officials, including the federal cabinet, diplomatic chiefs of mission, consuls, U.S. district attorneys, collectors of customs and internal revenue, and members of major federal commissions; and (5) state and national political party officials, including delegates, alternate delegates, and other participants in national party nominating conventions.  
      The listings are incomplete; development of the database is a continually ongoing project.
