Missouri territory attorney general, 1813; circuit judge in Missouri, 1815-17; member of Missouri territorial House of Representatives, 1818; delegate to Missouri state constitutional convention from St. Louis County, 1820; U.S. Senator from Missouri, 1821-31; member of Missouri state senate, 1834-35. Died in Boonville, Cooper County, Mo., September 28, 1837 (age 53 years, 288 days). Original interment at City Cemetery; reinterment in 1858 at Walnut Grove Cemetery.
      Barton County, Mo. is named for him.

      Lawrence Vest Stephens (1858-1923) — also known as Lon Vest Stephens — of Cooper County, Mo.; St. Louis, Mo. Born in Boonville, Cooper County, Mo., December 21, 1858. Son of Joseph L. Stephens (1826-1881) and Martha (Gibson) Stephens (1835-1877). Democrat. Newspaper editor; banker; director, St. Louis and Southern Railroad; Missouri state treasurer, 1890-97; Governor of Missouri, 1897-1901; delegate to Democratic National Convention from Missouri, 1912, 1916 (member, Committee on Rules and Order of Business). Methodist. Scottish ancestry. Died in St. Louis, Mo., January 10, 1923 (age 64 years, 20 days). Interment at Walnut Grove Cemetery.
      Relatives: Married, October 5, 1880, to Margaret Nelson.

Lawyer; U.S. Representative from Missouri 6th District, 1883-85. Died, from acute nephritis and influenza, in Boonville, Cooper County, Mo., August 15, 1925 (age 85 years, 337 days). Interment at Walnut Grove Cemetery.

      Jacob Friedrich Gmelich (1839-1914) — of Boonville, Cooper County, Mo. Born July 23, 1839. Republican. Jeweler; member of Missouri state legislature; delegate to Republican National Convention from Missouri, 1900; Missouri state treasurer, 1905-09; Lieutenant Governor of Missouri, 1909-13. Member, Odd Fellows. Died February 21, 1914 (age 74 years, 213 days). Interment at Walnut Grove Cemetery.

    The Political Graveyard

    The Political Graveyard is a web site about U.S. political history and cemeteries. Founded in 1996, it is the Internet's most comprehensive free source for American political biography, listing 234,420 politicians, living and dead.
     
      The coverage of the site includes (1) the President, Vice President, members of Congress, elected state and territorial officeholders in all fifty states, the District of Columbia, and U.S. territories; and the chief elected official, typically the mayor, of qualifying municipalities; (2) candidates at election, including primaries, for any of the above; (3) all federal judges and all state appellate judges; (4) certain federal officials, including the federal cabinet, diplomatic chiefs of mission, consuls, U.S. district attorneys, collectors of customs and internal revenue, and members of major federal commissions; and (5) state and national political party officials, including delegates, alternate delegates, and other participants in national party nominating conventions.  
      The listings are incomplete; development of the database is a continually ongoing project.
