Member of Iowa state house of representatives, 1857; member of Iowa state senate, 1861-65; U.S. Representative from Iowa 1st District, 1869-77; member of Republican National Committee from Iowa, 1870-72; U.S. Secretary of War, 1877-79; Judge of U.S. Court of Appeals for the 8th Circuit, 1880-84. Died in St. Joseph, Buchanan County, Mo., June 23, 1890. Interment at Oakland Cemetery.

John Nichol Irwin (1847-1905) — also known as John N. Irwin — of Keokuk, Lee County, Iowa. Born in Butler County, Ohio, December 25, 1847. Served in the Union Army during the Civil War; member of Iowa state house of representatives, 1875; mayor of Keokuk, Iowa, 1876, 1887; Governor of Idaho Territory, 1883; Governor of Arizona Territory, 1891-92; U.S. Minister to Portugal, 1899-1900. Died in Hot Springs, Garland County, Ark., December 22, 1905. Interment at Oakland Cemetery.
James Bruen Howell (1816-1880) — also known as James B. Howell — of Keokuk, Lee County, Iowa. Born near Morristown, Morris County, N.J., July 4, 1816. Son of Elias Howell. Republican. Delegate to Republican National Convention from Iowa, 1856 (member, Platform Committee); U.S. Senator from Iowa, 1870-71. Died June 17, 1880. Interment at Oakland Cemetery.
