Methodist. Member, Freemasons. Died in Sylva, Jackson County, N.C., October 3, 1961 (age 63 years, 43 days). Taken from his home by a group of Ku Klux Klan members, and lynched, in Uvalda, Montgomery County, Ga., July 29, 1930. Interment at Live Oak Baptist Church Cemetery.

Foreign Service officer; U.S. Consul in Colombo, 1945; U.S. Ambassador to Thailand, 1955-58. Member, Rotary. Died in Ailey, Montgomery County, Ga., November 18, 1994 (age 86 years, 19 days).
