Democrat. Lawyer; Arizona state attorney general, 1975-78; Governor of Arizona, 1978-87; candidate for Democratic nomination for President, 1988; U.S. Secretary of the Interior, 1993-2001. Catholic. Member, Council on Foreign Relations; Trilateral Commission. Still living as of 2001.
